Serenity's Guard
In addition to being the representative soldier for Jupiter and the Senshi of Protection, Sailorjupiter is part of a core group of warriors whose main goal is to personally look after the moon princess. Often referred to as the "inner senshi" by fans, this collection of guardians includes the first four soldiers to be discovered: Sailormercury, Sailormars, Sailorjupiter, and Sailorvenus.
Mizuno Ami/Sailormercury
Mizuno Ami represents intelligence and strategy among the four girls. She values intellect highly and puts a lot of energy into studying and mainting high grades in school. She consistently scores at the top of her class on exams, and it is rumored that her IQ is an impressive 300.
This close attention to academics causes her to be more withdrawn than the other girls. She is shy but by no means unfriendly, and while she is more likely to spend the afternoon reading, Ami is also involved with extracurricular activities. She shows skills in swimming and chess and has been known to compete in both areas. Ami is also highly supportive of her friends and will give up an afternoon of studying to support them. Her spirit is gentle, and she often acts as mediator among the other more fire-hearted girls.
Ami discovered her role as the soldier of Mercury shortly after Sailormoon was awakened. Her attacks are all water-based, from the fog-shrouding "Shabon Spray" to the freezing "Shine Snow Illusion." Sailormercury's position is most often defense, and she is likely to be aggressive only in dire situations. She is also the soldier with the most gadgets, like her goggles and mini-supercomputer, which allow her to scan and analyze enemies and attack situations.
Hino Rei/Sailormars
Hino Rei has one of the more versatile characters of the group, and she suffers the most for it between the anime and manga. She can appear hot-tempered and arrogant one minute, then calm and patient the next. These extremes in attitude stem from a fierce loyalty towards her friends and a need to protect her own heart. Her spats with Usagi help create this perception, but the two's arguments represent the deepest care.
Rei works as a miko at her grandfather's Shinto shrine where she hopes to one day become a priestess. She is also sought after for her gift of prophecy: she offers fortunes and meditates to see the future throughout the series. Rei is also a gifted archer and, in the anime, a singer-songwriter. Her opinion towards boys varies greatly between the anime and manga. In the anime she mirrors Minako's boy-craziness. In the manga she has little interest in men and is more devoted to developing her skills as a priestess.
Rei awakened the spirit of Mars after Sailormercury, becoming the third senshi to join the team. Her representative element is fire, and all her attacks reflect this. Her role as an offensive fighter is well-deserved: her attacks are both powerful and accurate. Her ability to sense and bind spirits is a great aid to the team as well.
Aino Minako/Sailorvenus
Aino Minako is easily one of the most developed and intricate characters in the series. She is never without a smile on her face even though she has endured a heartful of tragedy through unrequited love and the struggles of duty versus dreams.
She is akin to Usagi in her interests and habits. She has a cheery personality and would rather read manga and chase idols than worry about school. Her ultimate dream is to become a singer. Minako also shows skill in volleyball and other sports.
Technically, Minako was the first senshi. Long before Usagi had any inkling of her destiny, Minako fought crime as the masked-fighter Sailor V. Through the help of Artemis and her masked enemy Kaitou Ace, Minako awakens as Sailorvenus and leaves her solitary life to find and fight alongside the other senshi.
Due to her time fighting alone, Sailorvenus is initially more skilled in combat than the other girls. She is the soldier of love and beauty, and her attacks use hearts, beams of light, and whip-like chains. Sailorvenus is also very agile and athletic in combat (possibly since, as Minako, she is involved in volleyball and other sports).
